Paddling for those with impairment

Norwich Canoe Club welcome Paddle-Ability paddlers

Groups from MENCAP, BUILD Disability Group, and the Hamlet Centre Trust have regularly visited the club. We also have individual Paddle-Ability members who paddle open canoe in the warmer months and others who join in club training as preparation for racing.

Specialist coaching

We have three specialist Paddle-Ability coaches, Julie Hicks, Martin Matthews and Tim Scott (2013 BCU Paddle-Ability Coach of the Year runner up) who have all attended coach disability courses at Paddle-Ability conferences run by British Canoeing. They are supported by many other coaches with paddle-ability experience. Martin Matthews can advise on adaptive equipment or specialist clothing as he worked with Olympic para-canoeists in this area.

Specialist boats and equipment

NCC have an adapted K1 (kayak for one paddler) that is extremely stable, and an adapted K2 (kayak for two paddlers) that enables amputees to steer with a knee / foot system as well as extremely stable open-top Canadian canoes. Our clubhouse has wheelchair ramps and lift access to changing and social facilities on the first floor above the boathouse.

Sprint and marathon racing

If you want to race, you can. If you get really good there is even the chance to try out for the Paralympics.? ?British Canoeing’s vision is to be?the No 1 Olympic and Paralympic Canoeing Nation with quality and depth of excellence in all that we do.? Why not start you Paralympic career at Norwich?
