Make canoeing everyone's sport

Equality and Inclusivity

Norwich Canoe Club recognises that we live in a diverse society and therefore we endeavour to ensure that all visitors and members are given the same opportunities regardless of their characteristics or socio-economic backgrounds

Norwich Canoe Club is fully committed to the principles of equality and opportunity for all. We want to ensure that everyone has a genuine and equal opportunity to participate in Paddlesport at all levels and in all roles of the sport, irrespective of age; disability; gender reassignment; marriage and civil partnership; pregnancy and maternity; race; religion or belief; sex and sexual orientation.

In addition, Norwich Canoe Club endeavours to ensure that all are given the same opportunities regardless of their socio-economic background. This includes members, volunteers, participants, supporters, coaches and officials. To this end we offer hardship bursaries for those who need financial help to be a member of the club.

How we Benefit from being an Inclusive Club.

Without being an inclusive club we risk losing new members, their skills, friendship, contribution and prevent our further growth into the community, we risk losing athletes that have the capability or potential to represent Norwich Canoe Club or Great Britain.

Benefits of us being a diverse and inclusive club are:

  • Positive club environment – Inclusivity creates a positive club environment where members appreciate and learn from each other’s backgrounds and experiences.
  • Increased club membership – We can understand and address the needs of different communities to attract more people to take part. This, in turn, has a positive impact on perceptions of the club and sport, encouraging others to consider canoeing.
  • Performance success – We have access to a wider sporting talent pool which can contribute to our performance success.
  • More volunteers – We have access to a wider talent pool from which to attract
new volunteers to contribute to the success and running of our club.
  • New skills and expertise – New members and volunteers bring new skills, experiences and expertise to our club which can help to promote innovation and new ways of working.
  • Broader networks – Our club benefits from the new community networks that diversity brings.
We need you!

Canoeing for disabled people

We have developed a strong Paddle-Ability programme that focuses on increasing regular participation for disabled people in canoeing. There is also a British Canoeing Paracanoe programme for individuals who aspire to compete at the Paralympics. Norwich supports athletes wishing to enter the Paracanoe programme. Canoeing is a fantastic sport for people with a disability with a wide range of opportunities, activities and adaptations to meet individual needs.

Norwich Canoe Club recognises that it has a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled persons. The club considers all requests for adjustments and where possible will accommodate reasonable requests and will work with disabled Stakeholders to implement any adjustments that will enable them to participate more fully in all canoeing activities.
