There have been some recent successes and events for members of the canoe club.
U12 Sprints
Firstly, A big congratulations to our U12 sprint members, who won the Marsport Trophy for the mini-sprint series 2023!
Points are accumulated by each paddler during each of the four National Sprint Regatta races held at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. Competing against clubs from across the UK, the Norwich U12 team triumphed to be the mini-sprint champions. Well done to Cecelia, Hugo, Noah, Tom, Warrick and William.
Waterlands International Marathon Amsterdam 2024
Then, on 20th April 2024 four athletes from Norwich Canoe Club took part in the Waterlands International Marathon in Amsterdam for its 50th Anniversary race. The event attracts high class international fields with paddlers in the senior races coming from as far away as South Africa making this one of the biggest and most exciting races of the year.
It was a ferocious day of weather with strong winds and massive chop particularly at the start. The 24 kilometre long course has two portages including a famous one where paddlers paddle their boats completely out of the water with the reed beds at the edge of the canal providing a smooth runway. Kamila Sklenarova raced as part of the GB Junior Marathon Development Team and showed great skill and determination to come second. An international silver medal is a terrific achievement and something to be very proud.
The senior mens start was combined with the junior men making for over 80 boats on a start line that churned up huge wash. James How was the pick of the three Norwich Canoe Club senior men competing. After a bumpy start he fought his way through the field to come 14th which is his best ever K1 result. Just a minute behind was Albert Hicks and Oli Rix was a hugely commendable 35th. Congratulations to all the NCC paddlers. It’s a great race and hope those results have inspired others from the club to attend in 2025!
